Changemakers
Nexus/Spring 2022
Changemakers. It’s what comes to mind when I think of the students who founded and persuaded the Faculty to formalize a public legal aid clinic. It’s what comes to mind when I think of the current DLS students who are passionately supporting their clients.
U of T Law is fortunate to count some of the brightest young legal minds anywhere among its students. I am immensely proud that so many of our students have dedicated their time, energy and expertise to giving back to the community and those in need in such a meaningful way. DLS and our students have long been engaged in tackling the overwhelming challenge of ensuring every member of our society has access to expert legal advice, represented by individuals from similar background and lived experience, and the opportunity to engage in the debate, creation, interpretation and administration of the law.
As Dean, I am committed to the goal of access to justice. The Faculty will continue to be both proactive and intentional in its approach, with Downtown Legal Services playing a key role, alongside our Indigenous Initiatives Office, Black Future Lawyers Program, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access and accessibility initiatives, to name but a few.
50 years of impact and community engagement leave me optimistic. I am hopeful that, together, we can embark on the next 50 years with a renewed commitment to creating a more welcoming, open and engaged legal community.
Congratulations to all of the students, staff and faculty who answered the call for support of Downtown Legal Services clients and programs. You make a difference in the lives of the community you serve and inspire us all.
