Watch: Law in a Changing World

How have the law and legal education evolved over time? Why has the rigorous study of law prevailed for seventy-five years? Where do we go from here?

Celebrating 75 years of modern legal education, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law's conference, which took place on March 27 & 28, looked forward by looking back.

Present-day faculty members reflect on pivotal contributions to academic and legal development by U of T Law scholars over the last seven decades.

The Wright stuff

by Peter Boisseau from the Nexus archives (Spring/Summer 2017)

His nickname was meant simply as a mark of respect, but it also revealed the kind of leader he was. Cecil “Caesar” Wright transformed legal education in Ontario, and in the process, started the modern University of Toronto law school on its path to becoming one of the finest in the world.

Watch: Law 75 Gala

We kicked off our celebratory year with a gala event on Saturday, September 14, 2024.

Inspired by the "Law Follies" tradition — poking fun at the quirks of law school and the legal profession — students, alumni, professors and former deans took to the stage, in what proved to be a night of uproarious laughter and nostalgic reflection.

A special thanks to the night's master of ceremonies, Bob Rae (LLB 1977), Canada's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN.

Nexus/Fall 2022
By Scott Anderson

The University of Toronto's Faculty of Law brought together some of the world’s foremost legal thinkers for a recent event that celebrated the career of retired Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella (BA 1967 UC, LLB 1970, Hon LLD 1990) and recognized her contributions to legal thought around the world.

It was a toast by her peers before a full house at U of T’s Isabel Bader Theatre.
